Dexter...Law & Order...United States of Tara...

Why is it that in movies and TV shows whenever someone waits in their car in the street, watching someone, the person being watched never knows they're being watched? This is especially odd because the person in the car is usually under a street lamp and within feet of the person being watched. Yet the one being watched is oblivious.

Why is it that when a couple has a conversation the woman puts her back to the man, like that really happens in real life? If anything, women invade the man's personal space when arguing. We certainly don't turn our backs and carry on an entire conversation.

Why do Benson and Stabler never hug? They hugged once, and that was when Stabler's wife nearly lost their newborn son in the car accident with Olivia. That was an awkward hug. Am I the only "hugger"? My husband is a hugger (I love that about him) my family are all huggers, my sister-in-law (brother's wife) my friends - everyone, we're all huggers. Yet this duo, Benson and Stabler, never hug although they spend 90+ hours a week together.

Why do I cheer for Dexter when he plays out his role as vigilante serial killer? I don't like Rita. Do I dislike Rita because she is annoying or because I have a slight crush on the vigilante serial killer?

Hmmm maybe that's why I don't like Kristin Stewart as Bella. I love Bella's character in the book, but not so much the actress. I fell madly in love with Edward Cullen during the books yet the eyes of Jacob as a werewolf grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

And WHY do conservatives feel legalizing gay marriage would impact the "sanctity of marriage"? How does a marriage over here impact a marriage over here? I just don't get it. Jesse James and Tiger Woods affects the sanctity of marriage.

True Love

True love is when I am tired and want to go to sleep, he wants to go to a play at the Fringe Fest and we agree to let the other do their thing. Yes, he wanted me to go with him to the Fringe Fest play (Kansas Goodbye) and yes I wanted him to stay home with me. However, once I let him know I was too tired and said "but honey you can go" he lit up and was like "that would be okay if I went?"

I may take for granted the wonderful relationship we have. Healthy, trusting and loving. "Of course you can go honey! I'm just sorry I can't go with you."

He said "Thanks for letting me go babycakes. I'm sorry I won't stay home and cuddle with you but I really want to see this play."

Ah... it was totally worth the wait, this true love thing.

Facebook Drama

One of the reasons I am not sure I could handle children is because of technology. In my era, we had an easy time getting in trouble and that was without Facebook, text messaging and the Internet. For example, Facebook. I have witnessed girls I used to coach, who are now between the ages of 15 and 19, post very private details about their relationships and consequential break-ups. They post who cheated on who, who slept with who and who they are mad at. Wait, that would be, who they hate. On a public forum! A social networking site.

Just yesterday I witnessed one of my girl's profiles, it stated she is in an "open relationship". Open relationship? At 17!? I'm not judging. If a 17 year-old feels an open relationship is best for her, that's fine. But to post it on Facebook.

Not to mention the pictures these girls post. I feel so old saying this but I can't believe these pictures. I watch way too much Law & Order, I admit that, but these pictures are the exact types of pictures that are considered pornography on L&O.

Months ago I was bored, waiting for my husband to get home, and perusing Facebook. I came across a profile, I will call him James. He used to be married to a girl I went to high school with, let's call her Jane. They had a lot of kids, are now divorced. That's all good and fine. They live in small-town Cedar Rapids (well not really small town, 160,000) but from what I "hear" are making it work and being amicable. Well, one night James posts on his FB page that one of his good friends, lets call him Larry, slept with Jane. And the comments proceeded from there. Everyone in FB world got involved in this conversation. James was pissed (obviously) at both his friend and his ex-wife who he was at this point calling a slut on this social networking site.

Jane's friends defended her, James's friends defended him and then there were the stupid little spoons (people who stir shit up) Lori, for one, who instigated much more. This is all on a public forum.

That's all. Just had to rant. I post things like "I love my dogs" and "Husband took me on lunch date" and that could, arguably, be divulging too much.

Painful first date.

I just witnessed quite possibly one of the most painful first dates. I wanted to go to the couple and say, "hey, why don't you guys just go your separate ways, chalk it off to one of the many bad dates you will have to endure before you find "the one"."

I'm sitting at Borders. The man was trying way too hard to impress her and she couldn't even fake a smile. I felt like she could have at least made the best out of the situation. I mean, how many horrible first dates did I have that I said to myself, "Sarah, make the best of this. Its one hour out of your life. Deal with it. Its the price you pay for being blessed with the prince one day."

He was wearing a suit and talking into a dictation thingy when she first got here. She was painfully shy, had a Columbian accent. He had a cup of coffee on the high-top table, his laptop case/briefcase on the chair next to him. She approached the table looking down. Made eye contact with him briefly. I don't believe they shook hands. She hoisted herself up on the high chair and her legs dangled, connected at the ankles. He asked if she wanted coffee. She shook her head 'no'.

He talked about how he is a lawyer (which he clearly wanted her to know he is an important lawyer because he was talking into his dictaphone when she walked up to him.) Then went into how his son is a lawyer and graduated from Harvard law. Occasionally during the conversation he would reiterate two things. One - she was a very attractive lady and two - so, she worked two part-time jobs? So, she doesn't have a full-time job?

It was PAINFUL. It was almost like PTSD because I started having flashbacks of my horrible first dates. Horrible first dates.

Lesson in today's column? Make the best out of a bad situation! Its one hour of your life (if you're smart and schedule a coffee date like I always advise) just make the best of it and write about it someday!
